How to decide choosing special schools or mainstream schools for child with special needs?
16-03-2011

In fact, entering mainstream schools is not the most important; and most importantly, parents should know their children's problems, to help them grow in a pleasant, appropriate learning environment :

1. To overcome  psychological barriers, to address the issue
Weak children themselves know whether the school is caring for him and the students get along well ..., they do not care whether they are studying in a "special school" or   not. The one who is care about whether studying in a special school , may be the parents. Parents must first put aside the thinking "their children should study in ordinary schools", so that they can be more objective and arrange a suitable school for their children.

2.Put aside some of the negative views of special schools
Parents may visitdifferent special schools to understand and explore about their teachers, equipment and services. In special schools, teachers are concerned about the needs of students with disabilities into society, they will guide students the right social skills, life skills and create opportunities for them to access the community, develop their potential and learning to live independently.

3.Put aside their own subjective views of special needs children, take reference to the views of different professionals
Regular contact with the parents and children enhance the mutual understanding between them , so some parents think that their children's performance in daily life is better than the assessment by the Child Assessment Centre. Parents are afraid that that the assessment will affect the opportunity of their children to enter the ordinary schools. In fact, the Child Assessment Center will also consider the comment made by the pre-school training centers(such as the special child care centers) and parents, so the evaluation report is a objective and professional reference , Parents are advised to listen to the views of various professionals in order to make a more comprehensive understanding of children's abilities and needs.
