Misunderstanding about Intellectual Development

Misunderstanding 1: Intellectual development refers to writing and reading skill of children 

A lot of people believe that reading, writing and calculation skills are all the abilities of a child. In fact, these abilities only reflect part of the potential of a child. If a child is not good at reading, writing and calculation skills, you can help your child to explore and develop other potentials, such as social skill, language, art, music, design, physical education and creativity etc. The above potentials are often ignored by parents, but these potentials are important to daily life.

Misunderstanding 2:Intelligence is inherent, training is not effective to improve intelligence

 To certain extent, it may be correct, especially refer to children with developmental problems. They have some inborn limitation and it is important that parents realize and accept their limitation. Unrealistic or over demanding expectation is not beneficial to child development. Suitable training is necessary as it can help a child to improve within their limitation. In contrast, without suitable nurture even a child has a lot of potential; it will be a waste of their potential.

 Misunderstanding 3: Intelligence is for problem solving and adaptation of living. So, training and nurture of intelligence is  needed only when children grow up.

This concept is not correct; the principle of proper training and nurture is to be started as  early as possible. New born baby already has problem solving skills. For example, they can distinguish smell, sound, appearance in order to have proper caring. Thus, intelligence develops bit by bit. After a long period of time, they will be independent in thinking and self care. Yet, without strong foundation, children are not likely to have proper development.
