Story of Gurung
23-03-2011

Gurung (an alias) comes from Nepal; she has a son with her husband. Although Gurung has been living in Hong Kong for several years, but she can only understand simple Chinese and English, so she often encounters many difficulties in daily life. In addition, her social network is narrow. As she is lack of social support networks, she always feels helpless and do not know how to seek helpif she has encountered any difficulties.

Her son is almost 4 years old, he looks as lovely as other children. However, his language, intelligence, self-care skills and other development are very different from children of the same age. Two years ago, Gurung had brought her son to Maternal and Child Health Clinic. Doctor had been aware that the child was likely to have certain development problems, and referred the child to detail assessment in the Child Assessment Center. At that time, Gurung felt difficult to accept the doctor's initial diagnosis. She believed that the problems will be improved when the child has grown up. In the end, she did not bring her son to the Child Assessment Center. "At the time, I thought that my son will naturally get better when he has grown up. As I cannot understand Chinese and English very well, the referral is too much trouble to give up." Gurung said. Afterward, Gurung sent his son to Nepal because she believed her son will get better if he stayed in Nepal and no more language barrier. Two years later, the child's condition was not improving. Her son ‘s intelligence, self-care, emotional and language had larger difference compared with children of the same age. Gurung was disappointed and worried as her son was not improving as what she expected. She had to accept the fact that her son may have development problems. Gurung has decided to bring her son to Hong Kong and ask for support.
Recently, her son was referred by doctor and is now waiting to an assessment of Child Assessment Centre. Gurung sometimes felt guilty because she has given up to the referral by doctor two years ago.

"Evading the problem will only make the problem worse. The problem of my son may not be so serious if my son has taken the referral.  "Gurung said. In order to help children with developmental problem effectively, parents should seek the professional advice and support, so as to early diagnosis and intervene the problem.Gurung felt relieved that there are some social resources in Hong Kong that helped children and parents in overcoming the challenges in development.
